Excerpt from "Cougar," by Adam Luebke & RJ Williams
She watched him rise from the old rocking chair.
"Chair’s going to break," he said, "someday."
Was he expecting an answer? She didn't know. Inwardly she smiled. The amused expression on her face carefully shielded by the open book she was holding. Outwardly, she ignored him.
Tanny stretched, and ran his long fingers through his
hair. He then ambulated his tall frame toward the fireplace. The flames
from the fire mounted, and reflected throughout the room. The burning
amber gave his hair the appearance of unrefined gold. She sighed and
flipped the page, hardly able to concentrate on what she was reading.
"I think I’ll put one more on," he said, lifting the wood to eye level. "And let it burn out from there."
Again . . . Should she remain silent?
"Okay,Tanny," she said, lowering the book.
"That’s fine."
What else was she supposed to say?
